Kingdom of Colours -

Part II

From April 15, 2025 to May 17, 2026
Due to the great success of the exhibition ‘Kingdom of Colors – Colors and Glass, a Golden Combination’, curator Benjamin Janssens has put together a follow-up exhibition: Kingdom of Colors – Part II. More than forty pieces have been changed. Once again, you will see different glasswork by René Lalique with a beautiful color spectrum.
Lalique was not called the ‘Da Vinci of jewelry and glass art’ for nothing. Thanks to his background as a jeweler, he could work magic with colors and light. His work is not only colorful, but also very extensive. For this reason, we are launching this new exhibition. In the monumental Commanderij – the old knight’s building from 1286 and the third location of the Lalique Museum – the glasswork and the effect of light on color are beautifully showcased. Colors are crucial to the experience of an object. To demonstrate the influence of color on the perception of the object, several color variants of each exhibited glass design are on display.

Glass enamels

As a jeweler, Lalique often worked with colored glass enamels made from glass powder and metal oxides. By adding specific oxides to the glass mixture, colors are created that mimic the brilliance of gemstones. For example, manganese oxide produces an amethyst color, cobalt oxide a sapphire color, and gold oxide a type of red reminiscent of ruby. These colors can be seen in various glass designs by Lalique. To demonstrate the influence of color on the perception of the object, several color variants of each exhibited glass design are on display.

Kingdom of Colours

Part II

Many art lovers visited the exhibition Kingdom of Colors - Colors and glass, already a golden combination. Now, Part II follows as a continuation. The space in De Commanderij has fantastic natural light.
