After years of restoration
The Commanderij is open

The restoration of De Commanderij, the knight’s building from 1286, is a mega-project that many people have been working on very hard for years. But the first milestone has been reached. The ground floor has been put into use, as well as the mezzanine. Watch the video about De Commanderij.

The old knight’s hall has been completely restored and furnished as a contemporary exhibition space. In the newly built conservatory, the development of René Lalique’s life and career is on display. Interactive media columns in pastel colors and delicate glass display cases compete for the attention of museum visitors. The hard work has resulted in a building of absolute beauty and class.

Even though the renovation and restoration are steadily continuing, there is already a museum location here that we can be proud of. On the ground floor, the first exhibition ‘Kingdom of Colors – Part II’ can be seen, featuring works by René Lalique.

The Commanderij

On July 29, 2023, the ground floor of De Commanderij, a historic former knight’s building dating back to 1286, was put into use. This building, located directly behind the current museum, once belonged to the Order of Teutonic Knights. It has been partially restored and is being further renovated and remodeled with subsidies from, among others, the Province of Gelderland, the Municipality of Doesburg, the Order of Teutonic Knights, and other parties. On the ground floor in the attached conservatory, the life and career of René Lalique take center stage. On the mezzanine, the timeline of the museum’s namesake can be seen. The large hall hosts changing exhibitions. After the completion of De Commanderij, the building will be suitable for displaying a large collection of works by René Lalique in a fully adapted facility, accessible to everyone, including people with limited mobility or those using a wheelchair or mobility scooter. A special room will also be set up for people with visual impairments. Click here to view an artistic impression of the new Lalique Museum.
